"This show will feature a new series of my video game pieces, made with transparent pixels made of resin that are lit up from inside. I have been a fan of classic arcade and video games for a long time and being able to recreate these characters using light shows them as we remember them -- lit up and colorful. Many of these characters have become iconic and I believe that is partially due to their simplicity. The limits of the technology required some serious creativity and I love that people are learning to appreciate 8-bit images."

LIT BITS
Solo Show, Kanon Collective, October 2016
This show features more pieces from my series on classic video game characters, only these pieces are illuminated. This work revolves around the simplicity of early video games and how their iconography has stayed with us over the decades. I truly believe that limitations inspire great art and that the classic video games from the 80s are a perfect example of this. The limited technology required the creation of characters using square pixels and a limited number of colors. Instead of relying on technology, the creators had to rely on their imagination. These characters ended up being incredibly memorable and they remain a permanent part of our visual lexicon. Who hasn't looked at a pie with one slice gone and thought of PacMan?

The Persistence of 8-bit Memory: New Works by Kym Bloom
Solo Show, Kanon Collective, May 2015
My video games series examines the beauty and simplicity of 8-bit imagery from classic video games, as recreated with candy. This series expands on that in a more surreal manner, allowing the pixels to escape their bounds and float off into space. The 8-bit technology meant that the characters were more basic, but limitations often make people more creative and I believe that's why these characters have become so iconic.

8-Bit
Solo Show, Kanon Collective, September 2013
"Sometime limitations produce the best ideas. I love the video games from the eighties because the limitations of the technology meant that people weren't able to fashion characters in full 3-D with every color of the rainbow -- they were limited to 8-bit graphics and still managed to create some of the best-loved and most memorable characters that defined my generation. There's a certain innocence to these characters in their simplicity, and re-creating them in candy only magnifies that. And it happily combines two of my favorite childhood loves."

This show is a continued exploration of using candy to create art. Candy holds memories from childhood -- color, smell, texture and taste -- that evoke feelings of being carefree and uninhibited. I'm fascinated with the dichotomy of using those kind of feelings to create something so structured and pixelated as video game imagery. There's a beauty to the perfect arrangement and a nostalgia to the edgy and "blocky" feel to it all -- "This is what they looked like when I was a kid." Because computers are continually striving to perfectly reproduce reality, it's almost refreshing to go back and live in the world where computers and the real world had very little in common... a fantasy land of Space Invaders and lollipops.

The Sunny Side of Vance Cowkland, Summer 2006In May, 2006 I was selected as one of the artists to paint a cow for the CowParade event in Denver. Here is a photo of the finished cow that spent three months living, ironically, in front of John Elway's steak restaurant in Cherry Creek.
